Neurodiversity is a framework that recognizes neurological differences and behaviors as natural variations among humans. While this applies to all developmental and mental health conditions, it is more often referring to traits and experiences specific to the Autistic and ADHD community.
Neurodiversity-affirming practices focus on accepting neurodivergent individuals as they are, without attempting to change them.
This perspective shifts away from traditional models, which often treat developmental and behavioral differences as problems to be fixed. Instead, neurodiversity-affirming approaches celebrate these differences, teach meaningful skills, and advocate for accommodations that enhance individuals’ strengths.
While practices that have harmed the neurodivergent community are present in multiple fields and society at large, they’re most often identified within Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). ABA practitioners hold the responsibility of seeking out feedback from Autistic individuals who have experienced harm, and to apply that feedback in our own work.
